Dr. Gregory Feld, Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Perminova, Inc., and Director of UC San Diego Health System’s Department of Cardiac Electrophysiology, is among the top 1 percent of the nation’s electrophysiologists, according to new rankings of top doctors by U.S. News and World Report.

US News Top Doctors, chosen by peers nationwide, were announced today by the news magazine. Dr. Feld has long been recognized as a leader in the field of electrophysiology, the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal heart rhythms, which is the fastest growing of all cardiovascular disciplines. Dr. Feld developed Perminova EP, a web-based cardiovascular information system customized for electrophysiology.

“I’m honored that my colleagues think highly enough of my work to nominate me among the country’s top electrophysiologists,” Feld said. “Electrophysiology is rapidly growing in importance as we refine techniques to treat abnormal heart rhythms and save lives that may have been lost only a few years ago.”

Dr. Feld originally developed Perminova EP to collect data on electrophysiology (EP) cases for use in research into treatments for abnormal heart rhythms. The product grew into an information system to streamline and improve workflow, scheduling, billing, reporting and sharing patient data among all doctors, nurses and technologists in the EP lab. Because it is web-based, clinicians can access patient data anytime, anywhere and from any browser; automated reporting functions in Perminova EP allow doctors and nurses to complete operative and case reports within minutes of a procedure’s completion without dictation and transcription.

As Dr. Feld originally envisioned, Perminova EP also collects thousands of data points for each electrophysiology procedure and stores them in a scalable, secure private database, where they can be de-identified and used for medical research and clinical trials. Perminova EP is an early example of how big health data can be aggregated for research use to help develop breakthrough treatments.

“Dr. Feld’s vision in creating Perminova is indicative of his national leadership in the field of electrophysiology,” said Craig K. Collins, President & CEO of Perminova. “The recognition is not only for his knowledge and skills as an electrophysiologist, which are immense, but also for his foresight in moving the specialty forward.”

In addition to his position as Director of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Department, Dr. Feld also is Professor of Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His clinical responsibilities include performing up to eight ablation procedures a week, as well as pacemaker and defibrillator implantation procedures. He currently performs the largest number of ablations for atrial fibrillation in Southern California.
Dr. Feld has pioneered several new treatments for cardiac arrhythmias, including catheter ablation of atrial flutter and AV node modification for atrial fibrillation. His current research includes optimizing techniques for catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation, and development of new energy sources for catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation.

Dr. Feld received his MD degree from Dartmouth Medical School, his residency and fellowship training at UCLA and VA Wadsworth in Los Angeles, and joined the faculty at UC San Diego in 1987. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology and an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Feld has participated in numerous basic and clinical research studies and his research has been published in the journals Circulation, Heart Rhythm, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and the American Journal of Cardiology.

Perminova, developer of web-based information systems for cardiology centers, has launched a strategic alliance with LifeWatch, the leading wireless cardiac monitoring service provider in the United States, to expand interoperability between medical monitoring devices and information technology in cardiac electrophysiology.

Under the arrangement, Perminova EP, the information system designed for electrophysiology, will integrate reports from LifeWatch’s cardiac monitoring and telemetry products directly into Perminova’s cloud-based system. This will provide physicians, nurses, technologists and other staff with a single source for patient information. Future development will also allow clinicians to order LifeWatch cardiac monitoring studies directly from Perminova systems.

The integration process begins with data uploading from a patient prescribed with one of LifeWatch’s suite of advanced ambulatory cardiac telemetry and standard cardiac event monitors to the LifeWatch data center. The LifeWatch data center then pushes the data to Perminova’s database to be matched with patients’ individual files. From there, the data is used by EP lab clinicians and becomes part of the health system’s electronic medical record. This entire process is electronic, greatly reducing the risk of human error.

“The strategic relationship between Perminova and LifeWatch creates important benefits for patients and healthcare systems,” said Craig K. Collins, President and CEO of Perminova. “On a daily basis, it will streamline workflow and improve patient safety in cardiac procedures. In a larger sense, medical device integration between Perminova and LifeWatch creates true interoperability, one of the primary objectives in the advancement of health information technology today.”

Said Dr. Yacov Geva, Chairman and CEO of LifeWatch AG: “Integration between medical devices and information systems is a critical next step in utilizing technology to improve patient health and safety. Medical device integration may also help relieve doctors, nurses and technologists of the burden of creating hard copy documentation, allowing them to spend more time on direct patient care.”

Perminova develops web-based cardiac information systems that manage scheduling, workflow, documentation and billing processes before, during and after cardiac procedures. Perminova’s system architecture also supports integration of medical devices and customization of robust data for research. Perminova’s web-based products are pioneering healthcare’s move from outdated client-server technology to modern-and-secure cloud computing.

LifeWatch is the nation’s leading ambulatory health monitoring services company, offering a comprehensive platform of innovative patient technologies and services that help physicians detect and analyze symptoms before they become major health problems. LifeWatch enables physicians to establish stronger connections with at-risk patients and provide better guidance to patients.

One of nation’s top heart hospitals rolls out web-based cardiac information system.

LA JOLLA, CA – Perminova, developer of a new breed of web-based information systems for the nation’s leading cardiology centers, announced that Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, one of the nation’s leading heart hospitals, has installed Perminova EP at the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust Center for Cardiac Electrophysiology.

Perminova EP is a web-based cardiovascular information system that manages scheduling, workflow, documentation and billing processes before, during and after cardiac electrophysiology (EP) procedures. Perminova’s web-based products are pioneering healthcare’s move from outdated client-server technology to modern-and-secure cloud computing.

At Mount Sinai, Perminova EP allows clinicians to quickly complete operative and case reports within minutes after a procedure. Reports can be electronically signed and immediately uploaded to the hospital EMR and sent to the billing department. During procedures, a full list of codes for devices, medications and equipment are captured electronically for efficient and timely reimbursement. Documentation and reports created by Perminova EP are highly searchable and can be accessed and completed anytime, anywhere and on any web browser.

“Perminova gives our EP lab the flexibility to access procedure records securely from any location. That means doctors and nurses don’t have to come in on weekends or late at night to catch up on paperwork, or get frustrated when the server is down and they can’t do any documentation,” said Vivek Y. Reddy, MD, Professor of Cardiology and Director of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Service at Mount Sinai Heart. “Improvements in documentation with Perminova EP may ultimately result in improved patient care and safety.”

Like other cardiac labs, Mount Sinai’s busy EP lab previously used email among dozens of people to coordinate patient and staff schedules and link with the billing department. Perminova simplifies and streamlines the daily process of managing an EP lab. Perminova’s features allow staff to proactively manage cases several days in advance, preventing case delays by ensuring each patient has necessary insurance authorization and pre-operative tests.

“Cardiologists have said that they spend more time on the paperwork than they do on the pacemaker,” said Ken Miceli, Senior Director of Information Technology at Mount Sinai’s Cardiovascular Institute and Heart Hospital. “That’s going to change with Perminova EP. We see the entire documentation process becoming easier yet more comprehensive, and this will provide both administrative and clinical improvements for the EP lab.”

In addition to workflow and scheduling, Perminova EP also dramatically improves billing by eliminating lost charge sheets and reducing reimbursement denials, while reports from each procedure are automatically available to Mount Sinai’s billing department. Perminova EP also helps the EP lab go paperless, a goal for the entire Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Perminova products are browser-based and cloud-based, deploying and upgrading easily via the web with rapid configuration, integration and customization. Deploying Perminova EP is relatively inexpensive compared to enterprise software and does not require expensive new hardware. Perminova products can be seamlessly integrated into any hospital’s electronic medical records system. Perminova’s architecture allows integration of medical devices and customization of robust data for medical research and clinical trials.

“The deployment of Perminova EP at Mount Sinai Medical Center makes one of the nation’s top EP labs even better by simplifying operations, sharing data and enabling research,” said Craig K. Collins, President and CEO of Perminova Inc. “Mount Sinai’s physicians, nurses and technologists will spend more time on direct patient care while the lab’s charge capture increases. State-of-the-art electrophysiology truly moves into the 21st century with Perminova EP.”

About Mount Sinai Medical Center
The Mount Sinai Medical Center, founded in 1852, is a 1,171-bed tertiary- and quaternary-care teaching facility and one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most-respected voluntary hospitals.
